I AM 41 years old, there’s no longer any need to try to hide it, the invading salt is conquering the pepper on my face and scalp! I feel like I am starting to reach a place of slightly higher maturity as a result of over 4 decades of searching for who I AM. The breakthrough is that there is no who, there is only I, and I AM. The exciting way to view this is that I AM infinite potential. The straining part is that I AM in control, I AM responsible for everything that I become. In the words of the immortal Marty McFly, “That’s heavy.”
You see this searching particularly strong in young people; searching for identity to know where they fit in. That instinct was strong in me, and has not totally been extinguished. We change our wardrobe, change our friends, change our spouse/job all in an effort to find ourselves; to find out who we are and where we fit.
We don’t fit. Life isn’t some grand jigsaw puzzle. On the surface this may seem scary because of our desire for belonging and companionship. But this realization doesn’t preclude us from those things; it frees us from the idea that there is only ONE place that we fit. That we have to search for that ONE environment that feels perfect: Utopia… But it doesn’t exist. This is why so many people lose hope after achieving what they set out to conquer:
Get the grades
Get the job
Have the family
Get the raise.
All worthy pursuits but none of them hold the keys to Utopia because none of those things alone are the purpose. The pursuit is the purpose, growth is the purpose.
At any given time in our life we are just actors playing a role. At any given time we can choose a new role. But the achievement isn’t in the new role, it is in the skills you acquire and the growth you experience to play the new role.
The essence of life is growth, it is the deepest desire of all living things and that desire is only tempered in humans by various psychological impairments. The band-aid for them is treatment, therapy, drugs, etc. These things have their place. But the CURE is seeking growth.
What does this mean? Stop searching for yourself and start creating yourself.
Our minds are a computer, powerful hardware. But we are not programmed we are PROGRAMMABLE. Importantly, we are constantly being reprogrammed. If we are not the authors of that software then we hand our destiny to outside forces.
Who AM I? I AM not everything, I AM anything
My prayer for you today is that you stop searching for yourself, and start creating yourself.
YOU ARE…
